Everyone was getting their panties in a knot over the union vote held at the Volkswagon plant in Tennessee. Southern Governors even issued a statement on the adverse effects of unionization at this and other automotive manufacturing plants. Well, folks, this is just another example of a real Nothing Burger.
Tennessee, along with 28 other states including South Carolina, upholds the principle of ‘Right to Work’. This is a straightforward concept that ensures no one can compel you to join a union to secure employment. Moreover, your decision to not join a union cannot be used against you in terms of job opportunities or job security.
Consider this: in a unionized plant, an individual has the freedom to decline union membership. Yet, they are entitled to the same pay and benefits as those who have chosen to join the union. This means they can avoid paying union fees to officials who, in their view, do not contribute to their welfare. The worker who refuses to join gets all the benefits for free. God, I love “Right to Work” laws.
